Saving corals, one breath at a time: new national record in freediving for the Irish Elaina O’Brien

Elaina O’Brien, the “Irish Mermaid” and founder of the travel blog NomadVentura has set a new national record in freediving for Ireland, by holding her breath for a staggering 5’02” at a competition in Cebu in the Philippines at the weekend.

As a member of ORCireland (Ocean Research & Conservation Ireland) and a volunteer for the environmental organisation Ocean Quest Global, she did so in an effort to raise awareness about the role freedivers around the world can play in saving corals through coral reef protection and rehabilitation.
